Energy Saving Tips
Energy Saving Tips to reduce your energy Usage and Save you Money!
Right in your own home, you have the power to save money and energy. An energy efficient home will keep your family comfortable while saving you money. Whether you take simple steps or make large investments to make your home more efficient, you’ll see lower energy bills. Over time, those savings will typically pay for the cost of improvements and put money back in your pocket.
Start with these easy no-cost and/or low-cost ways to save energy:
- Heating and Cooling System Age – Heating and cooling costs account for nearly half the home’s total energy bill. If your central air conditioning unit is more than 10 years old, replacing it with an ENERGY STAR® certified, high-efficiency model could cut your cooling costs by 30 percent! A C&C Air representative can assist you in selecting the right Air Conditioning / Heating system for your home. Did you know that you may be eligible to receive rebate/incentives as well as no interest loans to pay for these improvements?
- Rebates & Incentives – High-efficiency heating and cooling equipment may qualify for the New Jersey Natural Gas rebate program. A C&C Air representative can perform a Home Energy Audit to determine your eligibility for various incentives, brought to you in partnership with your gas company. The more energy-saving measures you install, the greater the incentive you may be eligible to receive, including generous gas company rebates.
- Programmable Thermostats – Install a programmable thermostat to lower utility bills and manage your heating and cooling systems efficiently. A properly programed thermostat can save you up to 10% on heating and cooling costs. A C & C representative can assist you in the selection and installation of the right thermostat for your home. If you find your thermostat is too confusing we can provide a more user-friendly model.
- Home Temperature Control – Install a door sweep on your garage door to seal the gap between the bottom of your door and the threshold. This prevents cold air from coming in and warm air from escaping your home.
- Water Heaters – Lower the thermostat on your water heater to 120o In addition, wrap older water heaters with an insulating jacket or blanket to minimize excess heat loss.
- Water Heater / Usage – Take shorter showers instead of baths and use low flow shower heads. If you listen to music while showering, set your playlist with songs that equal less than 10 minutes and try to complete your shower before the playlist ends.
- Heating – When using your fireplace, turn down your heater. When you’re not using it, close the damper to prevent cold air from coming in.
- Furnace / Heating – When in your home, set the furnace thermostat at 68o or lower, health permitting. Three to five percent more energy is used for each degree the furnace is set above 68o.
- Home Comfort – Be sure to have ceiling fans rotating properly to improve room temperature. During warmer months ceiling fans should be rotating counter clock wise to create a wind chill blowing down on you. In colder months, the fan should rotate clockwise, blowing toward the ceiling to push the heat that rose to the ceiling down.
- Air Conditioning / Heating System Maintenance – Check the filter on your air conditioning system and clean or replace if dirty. A dirty filter will slow air flow and cause your system to use more energy.
- Air Conditioning / Heating System Maintenance – Have your air conditioning / heating system inspected annually to make sure your system is operating at its peak performance.
